What are the best practices when setting my book's AI usage?

AI can be used for different aspects of a book from research to actually writing part of the final story. We let you disclose how you used AI. We then use this information to find the right reviewers for your book. For example, if you only used AI to design the cover, we will show your book to readers who are okay with AI covers but may not be okay with AI being used to write part of the story.

There are presently six labels to choose from when updating your book's AI usage:

Label Description
No AI Was Used No AI was used in the creation of the book.
Used AI to Brainstorm / Research

AI was used to research, plan, or brainstorm parts of the book. Examples:

  • character names
  • historical settings
  • world building
  • outlining
  • planning the story arc
Used AI to Refine / Polish AI was used to proofread, edit, fix grammar, or format the ebook. If you used third party tools or outsourced these tasks, you would need to consult with the third party to determine if they used AI.
Used AI to Design Cover AI was used to design some parts or the full book cover. If you used third party tools or outsourced these tasks, you would need to consult with the third party to determine if they used AI.
Used AI for Illustrations AI was used to generate some or all of the graphics or illustrations in the book. If you used third party tools or outsourced these tasks, you would need to consult with the third party to determine if they used AI.
AI Wrote Some of the Text AI was used to write some or all of the text in the book.

What if I used AI in some other way or wish to make more clarifications?

We don't expect the aforementioned labels to cover every scenario, just the most common ones. If your AI usage is more nuanced, we recommend selecting the most relevant labels and adding any clarifying information at the end of your blurb. For instructions on how to update your blurb, see this.

If you would like to suggest adding a new AI label to our system, feel free to contact us.

Is my disclosure visible to readers?

Yes. On your book page, there is a section titled AI Usage. Underneath that, a reader can click to see how you used AI if they want to know.

What if I don't want to disclose how I used AI?

If you elect to not disclose AI usage, readers will see Not Disclosed under the AI Usage section of your book page. Also, we will only promote your book to reviewers who have not shared any AI preferences with us. Since most reviewers have shared AI preferences, we recommend disclosing AI usage so your book can be shown to more potential reviewers.
